Example from a steel
component manufacturer.
Initial Investigation concluded:
 | Customer was using a product with poor
bio-stability, which had required regular treatment with large doses of
various biocides. |
 | Several operators had become sensitive
to common biocides used in most metal-working fluids. |
 | Surface finish was only adequate. |
 | Corrosion of components after machining
was leading to additional process time as components had to be dipped in
corrosion inhibitor. |
Recommendation:
 | Use a hazard-free metal working fluid,
which was free from formaldehyde, amine, and boron. |
 | Ensure product has good residual film
corrosion protection. |
 | Institute a coolant monitoring system. |
Results:
 | No operator comfort problems. |
 | Improved surface finish. |
 | Reduction in corrosion. |
